Treatment Decision Guides Empowering Online Users


A survey of users of interactive Mayo Clinic Treatment Decision Guides demonstrates the power of the programs' shared decision-making approach to help people better understand their conditions and gain confidence to make treatment decisions. Treatment Decision Guides are an integrated component of the Mayo Clinic EmbodyHealth Web portal. The programs combine guidance from Mayo Clinic experts with patient stories in text, video and audio formats.

The survey gathered responses from a sampling of 4,160 users of the programs over a one-year period between April 2005 and March 2006. Highlights of the Treatment Decision Guide survey include:

  • 85% of respondents said the Treatment Decision Guides provided answers to their health-related questions.
  • 78% of respondents said that the Treatment Decision Guides provided new information about treatment decisions.
  • 79% of respondents said the Treatment Decision Guides increased their confidence in their ability to make an informed treatment decision.
  • 62% of respondents said the Treatment Decision Guides helped them determine what treatment option was best for them.
  • 90% of respondents confirmed that the Treatment Decision Guides helped them communicate more effectively with their doctors.
