EmbodyHealth Coaching Counselors Use Motivational Interviewing

EmbodyHealth Coaching aims to help people make informed choices about behavior change through education, motivation and reinforcement of healthy choices. Research demonstrates that a personalized, collaborative approach is more effective than a one-size-fits-all “shotgun start” that can overwhelm an individual and deeply discourage him or her from making future change. Mayo Clinic EmbodyHealth Coaching counselors work collaboratively with program participants to:

  • Assess health and readiness to change (or review HRA results containing this information)
  • Set realistic goals and establish an action plan
  • Identify personal motivation techniques
  • Recognize barriers and relapse triggers
  • Identify educational tools to support behavior change

Taking the time to build rapport, assess readiness to change, identify areas of need and create an action plan will lead to healthier outcomes. Moving ahead at the right pace for the participants boosts confidence in their ability to change. Mayo Clinic EmbodyHealth Coaching programs, developed with the oversight of Mayo Clinic medical and behavior change experts, consist of:

  • An enrollment call
  • An assessment call
  • An educational packet mailing
  • A series of follow-up coaching calls
  • A satisfaction call
  • A six-month outcomes assessment call

Degreed counselors provide education, motivation, guidance and support. In addition, they will cross-reference other client resources, referring callers to other health-related programs and tools.
